Quadrupeds for industrial inspection: Unitree B2, Deep Robotics X30, and LYNX M20

Four-legged robots already inspect plants, tunnels and mine sites. How to choose among the three most widely used models in industry.

Short answer

For industrial inspection, the Deep Robotics X30 is designed specifically for plants and substations, with dust and water protection. The Unitree B2 combines high payload and speed. The LYNX M20 adds wheels to the legs, making it faster on flat terrain while keeping it capable on stairs and slopes. Before choosing, you need to define the inspection route, the sensors and the site's connectivity.

1. Why a quadruped and not a wheeled vehicle

A quadruped climbs stairs, steps over cables and moves through narrow corridors where a wheeled or tracked vehicle can't fit. That makes it ideal for inspection rounds in industrial plants, electrical rooms and tunnels.

3. The four questions that define the purchase

  • What does it need to measure? Temperature with a thermal camera, noise, gases, instrument readings or simple visual logging. The sensors define a large part of the value.
  • Is the round autonomous or teleoperated? Autonomy requires mapping the site and defining checkpoints.
  • Is there connectivity? At a mine site or in tunnels, a private network or a repeater may be needed.
  • Who operates it? Plan the training and who charges the batteries and reviews the reports.

4. How to get started

We recommend a pilot limited to a single inspection route, with indicators defined in advance: rounds completed, findings detected and response time for each finding. Those learnings inform the decision on whether to scale.

Frequently asked questions

Can a quadruped operate at a mine site?

Yes, industrial models have dust and water protection. Connectivity and site conditions are evaluated in the assessment.

Can it do rounds on its own?

Yes, after mapping the site and defining the checkpoints. It can also be operated remotely.
